This coffee shop is part of a beautiful story that was first inspired by a great woman, Azieb, an ambitious and hard-working Eritrean who dreamed of owning her own business one day and building a legacy.

That is when Laurel cafe was born in 2020. Kalaawit (Kay), her daughter and founder, started this project as a way to give back to her mother for all the things she had done for her and her siblings. Azieb’s wisdom and Kay’s determination led to this dream that had become a reality. The idea was to create an environment that feels like home. Coffee has always been a huge part of Eritrean culture for centuries. Today, coffee ceremonies remain an important part of Eritrean and Ethiopian culture and are often used to celebrate special occasions and socialize. Laurel cafe is a reflection of the sense of community that stems from that culture.

We believe that coffee can bring people together and can positively affect one’s daily life. With its minimalist style and oasis vibes, the coffee shop is located in the heart of the plateau Mont-Royal. We aim to continue providing a safe and cozy environment as well as quality food and beverages. You might have already heard the phrase; “it is just business”. Well, this project isn’t just business, it’s also personal.

Unfortunately, Azieb gained her wings in 2021 but her legacy will live on forever.
